Friday Classes

PLEASE READ THE INFORMATION ON REGISTRATION UNDER "SHOW: INFORMATION" BEFORE REGISTERING TO AVOID MISTAKES THAT MAY DELAY YOUR REGISTRATION. PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE TIMES OF THE LECTURES AND CLASSES SO YOU DON'T ACCIDENTALLY CHOOSE CLASSES OR LECTURES THAT OVERLAP. IF YOU DO, IT WILL RESERVE YOUR SPACE IN BOTH AND WILL RESULT IN YOU BEING CHARGED FOR BOTH ITEMS. WHEN REQUESTING A REFUND, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO CHARGE THE ADMINISTRATIVE CHARGE OUTLINED IN OUR POLICIES TO RETURN THE CLASS/LECTURE TO INVENTORY.

Supply Lists may be found by clicking on "Supply List" for a downloadable pdf of the supply list.  No other supply lists will be sent unless indicated in the description. Kit and/or pattern fees are to be paid to the instructor at the time of the class unless stated otherwise.

Lecture and evening activities can be found towards the bottom of this page. Right below the class descriptions are the times of the class, the cost of the class (not counting any kit/pattern/handout fees) and the total available spaces left in the class.

Irons and Ironing boards are furnished for those workshops needing them.

Abbreviations used in the supply lists:

BSS: Basic Sewing Supplies: needles, thread to match project, pins, marking  pencil/pens, ruler, seam ripper, thimble, needles threader, fabric scissors, paper scissors.

RCM: Rotary cutter and mat (large mats are better), ruler (6" x 24" unless specified different measurements)

SM: Sewing machine in good order with extra bobbins, extension cord, manual, threads to match fabric. If an asterisk (*) appears beside SM, then it means that there are machines already furnished for this class.

PPS: Note taking paper, drawing paper (unlined), lead pencil, eraser, ruler, paper scissors, masking tape, Scotch tape, glue stick.

 




 

 

 

201 IMPROV PATCHWORK HANDBAG - MARY NIELSEN

 
   
In this class, Mary will be teaching a "quilt-as-you-go" improvisational piece to create the awesome quilted fabric that will be turned into an even awesomer bag! The fabric will be created and the bag made in class. Options! Your bag can be completely scrappy or a single color, but lots of different fabrics bring this bag to life. Inside pocket options will make your bag perfect for you!

SUPPLIES: BSS; Lots of scraps - color coordinated (or not) - strips and chunks and pieces; 1/2 yd of fabric for your bag lining; 1/2 yd of fabric for bag sides, handle and tab closure; 1 yd fusible interfacing (Pellon SF 101); two 18" squares of cotton batting (fluffy batting is not recommended); one magnetic snap for the bag closure; one largish decorative button.

Big blocks and Linda's quick and easy technique (with no set in seams) gets this quilt together lickety split! This project can be made using purchased yardage, pre-cuts or from your stash. Linda will demonstrate how to break the block down to use with your stash. The supply list is for a twin size, but the quilt can be made larger or smaller. Pattern fee of $9 is payable to Linda at the time of the class.

204 AMAZING DRESDEN APPLIQUE - KIMBERLY EINMO

 
   
What fun you're going to have in this all day workshop - which is one of Kimberly's newest classes! You'll only need to do a little prep work before class to be ready to spend the day learning new techniques, trying out the ease of the Accuquilt GO! cutter, and sewing a stunning, new variation of a Dresden plate quilt. Have you ever wanted to use the Accuquilt GO! cutter to see how it really works? You'll get the opportunity to use it first hand to see just how easy it is to use. The GO! cutter effectively (GO! cutters and dies are provided for use in class) to cut your pieces quickly and oh-so accurately. After your fabrics are cut, Kimberly will teach you her magical machine applique techniques to turn the most basic utility stitches on the sewing machine into pretty, decorative stitch effects. She'll also teach you her signature "stached stitching" technique for a fabulous final flourish to your Dresden appliques. You'll have fun using the GO! cutter and accomplish so much!

Sewing machines have been kindly furnished by Janome for this class.

205 FLOWER SHOWER - DONNA THOMAS

 
   
Have a great day with Donna as you learn how to make this quick and easy applique flower block. Students will use simple and portable methods to make the flower petals and bias stems as well as lo-tech applique preparation for the leaves. All skill levels. Kit fee of $5 includes an assorted needle pack, needle threader, template plastic, sandpaper, and applique pins. Kit fee to be paid directly to Donna at the time of the class.

207 MULBERRY STARS - JO MORTON

Another test of your piecing skills! You will learn to make these 6" Ohio Star blocks accurately. You will also learn Jo's method of making the inner pointy border that fits, and her pressing tips.  The blocks are framed and have red cornerstones for an accent, the accent is repeated with the red pieced inner pointy border, a wonderful addition to your quilt collection. Please don't ask - the fabrics used to make the quilt are well over 5 years old - make it in "your" colors! Consider holiday themes for color choices.

Using the traditional Churn Dash block, they will teach their favorite basic techniques to help make your quilts successful! This class will cover rotary cutting with confidence, successful piecing, perfect pressing, squaring up blocks, and measuring sashings and borders.  This is a great class for beginners as well as experienced quilts who want to brush up on piecing techniques.

Michelle designed this project for Modern 180, Studio 180 Design's Modern Pattern line. Amusement is a fun and quirky quilt inspired by the Ferris Wheels found on the Amusement Piers in New Jersey, where Michelle grew up. This pattern is made using Studio 180 Design's Tucker Trimmer ® 1, Wing Clipper ® 1 and the Corner Pop® tools. Make this fabulous design without paper piecing! Intermediate skill level.

Precutting of fabric squares is required and will allow students maximum sewing and learning time in class.

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!

Finally a class that you know you have brought the right things for! In this fun-filled class, a kit of CUT fabrics is furnished. This is a wonderful group workshop for those that just want to sew and not have any cutting or thinking to do.

This class is the most popular class Charlotte offers and is a favorite in Houston. It fills quickly and is a SURPRISE in more ways than one. It is a mystery type class. No one gets any hints and yet those who take the class will want to take another. Each class is a different quilt. Rarely are the kits repeated. All kits in class are the same, there is no choice for the students. A relaxed day of laughter and sewing. Kit fee of $95 payable to the instructor at the time of the class includes all fabrics and materials needed for your quilt.

You have the basics down and you're ready for your next adventure in applique! Let Sue Troyan be your guide in this day-and-a-half class to creating a beautiful block that can be the center of your medallion masterpiece, or stand along as a lovely wall hanging. Starting with a traditional pattern, you'll learn a variety of techniques, from simple to complex, for each element of the design - woven basket or bowl, stems, leaves, blossoms (including the beloved ruched rose) and buds, and perfect centers. Would you like a little Broderie Perse? And if you want, you can top it off with simple embroidery, beading, even ink work: it's your choice! Best of all, you'll learn skills that you will use again and again in all sorts of different applique projects! Make it simple or painterly, it's up to you! Come join the fun and see how far you can go! Skill level: basic understanding of the applique stitch is required. Pattern fee of $5 is payable to Sue at the time of the class.

Always in popular demand! Bring your Featherweight and all those odd looking "parts" for a fun evening of discovery! Learn what attachments you have and how to use them. But, Betty doesn't stop there! Singer designed attachments, sold separately, to do just about everything. Betty will bring her collection for demonstration in class. See everything from an "embroidery" foot to an automatic "pinker." This is a great time to try "free motion quilting" with your machine. Don't have full attachments? Remember, other vintage Singer attachments will fit your Featherweight. Betty and her husband Richard own Pennsylvania Quilter - you know them as the Featherweight vendors at Quilt Odyssey. There will be a "question & answer" time in class with Richard. All skill levels, but cannot be a novice with the FW - you must have sewing time and comfort with your basic machine.

Let the romantic colors of peach, pink, white, lavender, moss and gray sweep you away as you embroider this footed vase of flowers on a silk background. Learn to improvise and fill your vase with all sorts of silk ribbon embroidery stitches and flowers. Learn whipped stitch ribbon roses, rose knots, Japanese ribbon stitch flowers, rosebuds, lilac sprays, lazy daisy leaves, folded leaves and colonial knots. This 5-inch square tiny embroiery is suitable for framing. Skill level - motivated beginner to advanced. Knowledge of basic embroidery stitches recommended. Kit fee of $20, payable to Cindy at the time of the class, includes 13 yds of 4mm silk ribbon, 5 yds of embroidery floss, 2 yds of embroidery cotton, 6 yds of Oliver Twist cotton thread, 10" square of dupioni silk, 10" square of cotton woven fusible, 3 needles, 3" of French lace and wood stiletto.
