Long Arm Classes

PLEASE READ THE INFORMATION ON REGISTRATION UNDER "SHOW: INFORMATION" BEFORE REGISTERING TO AVOID MISTAKES THAT MAY DELAY YOUR REGISTRATION. PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE TIMES OF THE LECTURES AND CLASSES SO YOU DON'T ACCIDENTALLY CHOOSE CLASSES OR LECTURES THAT OVERLAP. IF YOU DO, IT WILL RESERVE YOUR SPACE IN BOTH AND WILL RESULT IN YOU BEING CHARGED FOR BOTH ITEMS. WHEN REQUESTING A REFUND, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO CHARGE THE ADMINISTRATIVE CHARGE OUTLINED IN OUR POLICIES TO RETURN THE CLASS/LECTURE TO INVENTORY.

Supply Lists may be found at the end of each class description or by clicking "Supply List" for a downloadable pdf you can print out. No other supply lists will be sent unless indicated in the description. Kit and/or pattern fees are to be paid to the instructor at the time of the class unless stated otherwise.

Lecture and evening activities can be found towards the bottom of this page. Right below the class descriptions are the times of the class, the cost of the class (not counting any kit/pattern/handout fees) and the total available spaces left in the class.

Irons and Ironing boards are furnished for those workshops needing them.

Abbreviations used in the supply lists:

BSS: Basic Sewing Supplies: needles, thread to match project, pins, marking  pencil/pens, ruler, seam ripper, thimble, needles threader, fabric scissors, paper scissors.

RCM: Rotary cutter and mat (large mats are better), ruler (6" x 24" unless specified different measurements)

SM: Sewing machine in good order with extra bobbins, extension cord, manual, threads to match fabric. If an asterisk (*) appears beside SM, then it means that there are machines already furnished for this class.

PPS: Note taking paper, drawing paper (unlined), lead pencil, eraser, ruler, paper scissors, masking tape, Scotch tape, glue stick.

 





 

  

LA010 THE ABC'S OF CREATIVE STUDIO: A is for Allover Quilting - GEORGIA STULL

This is a Statler specific class. Edge-2-edge is your bread and butter! All Statler users need to know many different ways to finish an E2E! Georgia will cover Creative Studio basics, teach how to set Controller Definitions, teach shortcuts and Hot Keys, and share different methods of quilting edge-to-edge patterns. Did you know there are many ways to do an E2E? She will teach you how to use E2E and Repeat Pattern mode; and Georgia will teach you how to alternate, concatenate, trim and fill. She will also teach you recovery methods for those times that problems arise. Georgia always shares lots of practical tips and tidbits to help you have a great quilting experience with your Statler.  She will provide a detailed handout on a USB flash drive for your convenience. (2 hours) $5 handout fee.

LA011 THE ABC'S OF CREATIVE STUDIO: B IS FOR BEAUTIFUL BORDERS - GEORGIA STULL

This is a Statler specific class. Borders can add a powerful framework for a quilt. Don't dread adding borders! Become a pro! This class will cover as much about borders as Georgia can pack into 2 hours. She will start with how to choose the perfect pattern to enhance that quilt top and the preparation work that is so important. Next up, she will teach you her Easy Peasy method of quilting out those borders. (No kidding! It really is EASY PEASY!!) We will also cover how to quilt some of those "special" borders...applique and multiple borders. Georgia will provide a detailed handout on a USB flash drive for your convenience. (2 hours) $5 handout fee.

LA012 BUILD-A-STITCH - KAREN MARCHETTI

 
   
This is one of Karen Marchetti's most popular hands-on classes and is the basis of her books. Starting with a very basic stitch, you'll expand your library of stitches by adding one element at a time. This is a great class for beginners, or those needing a little more confidence in their free motion abilities. This technique helps to improve muscle memory all while increasing confidence. By the end of the class, you will have a full library of go-to stitches. Karen will share some neat tricks and tips on combining different stitches for even more stitch ideas. Kit fee of $20 includes handout, top/backing fabrics, batting. SUPPLIES: snips, sketch book and pen/pencil.

LA013 DIVIDE & DESIGN: THE CURE FOR QUILTER'S AGORAPHOBIA - LISA CALLE

 
   
Have you ever stood in front of a quilt and wondered how the quilter came up with the designs on the quilt? It really is easier than you think. In this class, Lisa will show how to approach the design process in a whole new way. Divide large areas of your quilt into manageable small spaces to create quilting designs that will make your quilt top sing! You will learn the step-by-step method of transforming everyday quilts into masterpieces and special quilts into treasured heirlooms. Class level: Confident Intermediate - helpful to have template/ruler experience.  This is an 8-hour drawing and hands-on quilting class. SUPPLIES: snips, straight ruler for drawing, sketchbook and pen/pencil for note taking

Kit fee of $20 includes handout, tracing paper, large print out of block, pencil, tape, quilt top, batting and backing.

LA014 DOODLE QUILTING - KAREN MARCHETTI

 
   
In this 4-hour hands-on class, Karen will cover numerous ideas on how to create one-of-a-kind doodle fills. This is what Karen refers to as zen-type quilting as you get into a relaxed no-stress fun zone - there are no wrong stitches. Karen will show you how to incorporate little mess-ups into your design. Students will use a multitude of stitches - both shapes and fills - to create an amazing totally unplanned created-by-you quilted doodle!  This class will loosen your imagination, you view of what quilting has to be, and allow you to create just what you like, every single time. A super-fun class - you are only limited by your own imagination, and you'll stretch it beyond the limit! Kit fee of $20 includes handout, top/backing fabrics and batting. LA020 THE ABC'S OF CREATIVE STUDIO: C IS FOR CREATIVE CUSTOM QUILTING - GEORGIA STULL

This is a Statler specific class. You can do custom quilting that makes a quilt extra special, and you can do it on your Statler. Quite honestly, Georgia doesn't do a lot of handguiding. Okay...maybe not any handguiding. That single fact drives her to figure out ways to make Creative studio work for her when she is working on a custom quilt! She also wants her custom quilting to be as efficient and effective as possible and she always wants it to be beautiful. She will teach you her special method of background fill. Georgia will also cover features such as Point-to-Point, Fill, Trim and Echo. You will become best friends with your right-click menu. Who knows? Maybe there will be all-new features to learn about! As always, Georgia will provide a detailed, step-by-step handout on a USB flash drive for your convenience. (3 hours) $5 handout fee.

LA021 TOTALLY TEMPLATES - LISA CALLE

 
   
Lisa relies on quilting templates to make the most of her complex and dynamic quilting desings. But using templates and rulers to stitch straight lines and perfect curves can be daunting. Join her as she shares her insider's knowledge on how just a few simple shapes open up hundreds of possibilities. You will leave this class with a solid knowledge of how to make the most of templates and work with them with confidence. This is a 3 hour hands-on class.

LA022 THE ABCS OF CREATIVE STUDIO: S IS FOR STAND ALONE MODE - GEORGIA STULL

This is a Statler specific class. Do you need to build your skills in Creative Studio? Do you want to set up designs for the next quilt while your Statler is stitching on a quilt? Well, it is time to learn how to access the power of Stand Alone Mode! Load Creative Studio (Statler software) on your laptop or regular desktop computer. Working in SAM will greatly improve your skills as a CS user. You will also learn how to "build" a quilt in SAM in order to audition quilt designs. As always, Georgia will provide a detailed, step by step handout on a USB flash drive for your convenience. (3 hours) $5 handout fee.

LA023 DENSE & DAINTY: FREEHAND FILLERS - MARGARET SOLOMON GUNN

 
   
Students may never want to simply stipple a background again after learning the many dozens of fillers that are possible. Margaret will introduce how she develops different fillers, so that students can create their own. Students will stitch a sampler with the many fills Margaret will introduce. Margaret's sampler has over 40 fills, but yours might have more!
All skill levels.  4 hour hands-on class.

SUPPLIES: scissors/snips, fabric marking pen or chalk, paper & pencil. Students may desire to have a 1/4" thick straight longarm template for marking, we will try to quilt without the use of templates.

$20 handout fee includes fabrics for machines, handouts and a CD of dozens of fillers to use as a reference.

LA024 FILLING THE SPACE - KAREN MARCHETTI

In this 4-hour hands-on class, Karen will share multiple plans and ideas to fill the various open spaces of a quilt top - some super simple while others more complex. Custom quilting is more than just quilting a top - you want to create something where there is nothing, while making the best use of negative space and creating secondary patterns. You will learn techniques that require little effort, but create significant effect. Using a custom-printed panel, you will create your own wall hanging using the techniques and ideas covered in class. Kit fee of $25 includes handout, printed panel, backing fabric and batting. SUPPLIES: sketchbook and pen/pencil; snips, blue water soluble marking pen; various longarm rulers - straight edge and curved (Karen's rulers - and books - will be available for sale in class).

LA025 READY, SET, GO! - KAREN SIEVERT

 
   
Hands-on 4-hour class

Are you new to longarming? Have you been longing to move from the back of the machine to the front, to free yourself from the computer? Then, this is the class for you!! Karen will cover fills, ruler and template work, feathers and how to have FUN with them all! Learning and implementing these skills will have you "on the front lines" (or "in front of" the machine) in no time at all! Skill level: Beginner and up. Bound handout will be provided by the instructor.

Let's face it, dealing with customers can be a challenge. We've been told the customer is always right! Well, that's not exactly true but we do need to find ways to build a positive relationship with our customers and meet their needs as a quilter. Georgia will pull from many varied "case files" to look at some customer experiences. You'll think she has met your customers!! Georgia will use her years of experience to help you learn some ways to deal with any customer that comes your way. She believes learning should be a fun experience! LA031 BEAUTIFUL BACKGROUNDS - MARGARET S GUNN

 
   
This hands-on longarm class  with grid-based backfills will introduce quilters to an array of relatively dense backfills that all utilize a premarked grid. Margaret will show students stitching paths for these beautiful designs. There is an emphasis on Sashiko fillers, a personal favorite of Margaret's - including, but not limited to, clamshells, pumpkin seed, apple core, and many more. Students will quilt a sampler quilt with premarked grids that feature nearly 20 designs! All skill levels.

SUPPLIES: scissors/snips; fabric marking pen, 1/4" thick straight longarm template; paper and pencil.

There is nothing worse than a machine that isn't stitching like it should! The thread is shredding! I have loops on the back! I have eyelashes on the curves! What is going wrong?? More importantly, how do I fix it??? You have tried everything you know! What will you do? Be prepared!! This class will provide you with problem-solving solutions to get and keep your machine stitching perfectly. LA033 RULER THE ROOST - MARGARET S GUNN

 
   
Students who are familiar with Margaret's work know that templates are a mainstay in her quilting, and that they are used for SO much more than just ditch stitching! Students will learn proper template technique, stitching paths for designs like cross-hatching, cathedral windows, and more -- using BOTH straight and curved templates. Students will stitch a preprinted sampler that will allow them to create many designs using templates. This 4 hour, hands on longarm class is appropriate for beginner to intermediate quilters OR quilters that desire experience mastering the use of templates.

SUPPLIES: scissors/snips, fabric marking pen, 12" arc curved-crossing ruler WITH concentric curved (not straight) etched lines (such as Boomerang by Deloa Jones), straight longarm template with parallel 1/4" etched lines, paper & pencil.

LA034 FOCUS ON FEATHERS - KAREN SIEVERT

Feathers are one of the most loved motifs in quilting! Many of us yearn to be able to make them, free motion, from the front of the machine! There are tips and techniques that will make us more successful! Karen will show you several methods for making feathers by building on one shape at a time. In addition, we'll cover background fills and ruler work that will truly make them shine! Folky, formal, or just plain fun, feathers are for everyone! Skill level: confident beginner up. Bound handout provided by the instructor.

LA035 THE ART OF TRAPUNTO - KAREN SIEVERT

 
   
HANDS-ON 4-hour class

Mystified by trapunto, but love the look? This is one of Karen's all-time favorite methods of quilting, because trapunto adds so much dimension and also that "WOW factor" to so many quilts! Trapunto, or shadow trapunto, can totally transform your quilt, and in this hands-on class, you'll learn how truly magical it is!! Best of all, students will go home with a sample that they can cherish, because they made it! You'll learn the how, why, when and "how to do it" from start to finish! This is the class for those of you searching for that something extra special you can add to your next project! Skill level: Intermediate and up Students whould be able to do basic feathering and have practical knowledge of how to use a straight edge ruler on a longarm.

Kit fee of $45 includes paper template, water dissolvable marker, lawn and shadow trapunto fabric, backing, batting and premarked and basted top for trapunto as well as handout.

Supply List: pen and paper for note taking; longarm ruler if you have one; regular (rotary cutting style) ruler for marking; thread snips; also blunt tip scissors or duck bill applique scissors for cutting away trapunto. Note: Karen recommends large ring to prevent finger soreness.

LA040 FEARLESS FEATHERS - MARGARET SOLOMON GUNN

 
   
This 4-hour hands-on class is geared to longarm quilters who want to add quilting feathers into their repertoire. We'll start at the beginning, learning feather anatomy, draw many types of feathers and spines, and take this muscle memory to the longarm. We'll learn filling shapes (triangles, squares, circles, diamonds, etc) with feathers, and talk about using feathers for borders. This class is geared to more beginner quilters who may have a fear of feathers, but Margaret can tailor it to those who have done some feathers, and want to expand their knowledge too.

SUPPLIES: Scissors/snips, fabric marking pen, paper and pencil.

Class handout fee of $20 covers all fabric and handouts.
