Instructor: Nancy Bills
Janome sewing machines are being furnished, compliments of our sponsor, for Nancy’s classes. You do not need to bring a sewing machine. Educators will be in the classroom at 8:30am to help you familiarize yourself with the sewing machines, so the class can start on time.
Vintage images printed on fabric are a fun, easy and innovative way to make unique quilts. The possibilities for using printed images are endless. This class offers a wall hanging project with six different vintage themes. Choose your favorite option to make in class and go home with a DNF, Darn Near Finished quilt, instead of yet another UFO. There is a kit required for the class that includes 17 different printed vintage images that have fusible Heat N Bond Lite applied and are trimmed and ready to use. This is more than enough for the project so you can choose your favorites to use in your quilt. Also included is a piece of double-sided fusible batting cut to size, a practice quilt sandwich to test your stitches, and a pattern for all the options offered – not just the one that you choose to do. Even a vintage themed label is included in the kit. Options include vintage sewing, vintage Halloween, early 20th century Christmas, mid-century Christmas, vintage Patriotic, and vintage Easter. You will need to prepare the simple quilt top and easy border at home before class (see Pre-class Homework). In class we’ll do some basic quilting using either straight or decorative stitches (no talent required) and then add the applique’ pieces, using the applique’ stitching as part of the quilting. You must bring a machine that does both straight and decorative stitching. A serpentine stitch is best for quilting, but a straight stitch can also be used. In addition, a simple three-step blanket stitch (preferred) and/or a zig zag stitch are used for applique’. See the supply list for more information. In addition to the class project, other samples of quilts made or embellished using printed fabric images will be shown, and instructions for printing your own images at home will be given. Samples of all the options can be viewed in the supply list or at Nancy Bills.com after April 1st. Class kits must be ordered from Nancy before July 1st and additional kits of images only can also be ordered. Please see the supply list for the ordering information. In addition, a CD with hundreds of images and basic instructions on how to use them at home will be available for purchase in class.
